At a cusp in his career when he had already processed figuration completely and begun walking in the direction of abstraction, Biren De must have been seeking inspiration from abstract imagery in daily life and found an arrangement of books in a library, or a personal bookshelf of a reading household, to be a deserving muse. This mixed media work, Arrangement, shows that the repetition of an object—in this case, books—has the power to work up a trance and awaken one’s consciousness towards abstraction that is a fundamental aspect of all things living and inanimate.
