This staged painting is theatrical in both its intent as well as its message. A figure slumps over a table with a levitating skull beside it—a modern day Hamlet?—while holding a sheet of paper that appears to be lit with flames in its hand. What has led to the figure’s fall—old age? misery? unhappiness? Is the skull a portent of terrible times to come? Or of some evil done in the past? The powerful painting’s haunting presence seems to act as a warning to the viewer to take heed.
