One of the few artists of his generation to move from abstraction to figuration, P. Khemraj’stryst with abstraction was the high point of his career, within which the Charpai series is truly iconic. This Charpai painting is widely considered his career best, not only for its intricate execution but also for his masterful use of the humble, handwoven rope bed as a metaphor for simple pleasures and struggles of life, for his own humble beginnings and cultural roots. A master draughtsman and colourist, Khemraj paid great attention to technique in his works. The vermillion tone makes this work stand out and represents sensual desire along with nostalgia.
