Even though he was known primarily as a sculptor, Ramkinkar Baij, belonging to the first batch of students at the Kala Bhavana in Santiniketan, had the ability to create a sculpturesque vision even in his drawings and paintings. This drawing of a couple of riders can be dated to the 1950s, and shows how skillfully the artist creates hastily executed lines—a prerequisite when creating sculptures—that make up a mass which serves to denote movement, lending it a dynamism that was essential for the rendered subject.
