Santiniketan-based Ramkinkar Baij experimented with a diverse range of stylistic impulses, his language underscoring the expressive potential of the materials he used. Known as a sculptor, he painted in robust and tactile strokes. Never one to be tied down by tradition, his work was often a conscious critique of the conventional styles of representation. The Untitled work under discussion combines the depth of the landscape genre with strong figurative elements as depicted by the two figures. The overall effect reveals Baij’s strong control on his paintbrush.
