Ramkinkar Baij dispensed with representation while working on many of the landscapes, his interest lying mostly in ‘evoking structure and inherent rhythm’ through the command and skill of his brushstrokes and an imposing colour palette. The landscape work under discussion, Palam (Palampur in Himachal Pradesh) shows Baij’s unique vision in capturing an imposing moment, a fabulous landscape with tall pine trees, a clear blue sky, a pathway filled with people and an overall beauty that is familiar but still unmatched in the manner that the artist captures it.
