The decade of the 1960s was a critical one for Avinash Chandra. He shed landscape paintings almost completely in favour of other emerging forms and patterns that evoked fluidity and expressiveness. These were bulbous forms, often hinting at sexuality. But in this painting, he has still not moved away from the landscape, the dome-like forms suggesting interior spaces, architectural manifestations, as well as celestial movements of planetary bodies. Chandra’s strength as an artist was in creating art that reflected his environment and milieu as he grew and adapted to cities abroad.
