This large painting is Sailoz Mookherjea’s ode to peace following the violence that marked the wars in the first half of the twentieth century. Buddha’s meditative visage and a pair of doves act as Mookherjea’s messengers on this mission, while a profile on the bottom right appears to be that of Gandhi with the Devanagari letters spelling out ‘Ram’ in an attribution to moral courage and convictions. The sleeping figures in the lower half attest to Mookherjea’s hope of everlasting peace in an ideal world: something to aspire to even when the going gets tough.
