Sailoz Mookherjea spent a good deal of his time in Delhi combing through the city’s sights to perchance come upon something that he wanted to paint. His wanderings this time seem to have taken him to the old city where, in the shadow of the Jama Masjid’s minarets, he chanced upon a haat or local, streetside market, where women can be seen looking for bargains of a fresh catch from the river Yamuna that flows in its near proximity. Mookherjea’s choice of a few bright daubs of colour and his distinctive scratchings establish his signature style in a painting that seems to have captured the spirit of the market.
