The decade when Maternity was done was significant in Krishna Reddy’s career. It was the time he arrived in London (1951) and went on to set up an enviable partnership with S. W. Hayter at Atelier 17 in Paris as an innovative printmaker. Maternity generates a rare energy by the multiple crisscrossing of lines and repetitive patterns, and blots of bright colours in strategic areas executed by the artist. It is a fine example of Reddy’s masterful control on the complex printmaking medium.
