Shuvaprasanna has been a unique chronicler of Calcutta—where he was born, educated, built his career, and to which he gifted Arts Acre, a mini city for the artists. It’s not just the city’s various concerns but also birds and beasts that figure in his oeuvre, the latter appearing rather prominently in his art. Often predatory, these beings prowl the city’s alleys and are ready to attack upon sensing any danger. In this Untitled oil, however, it’s a benign crow that perches on a blue rock. The look in its eye is complacent as it surveys its surroundings on an evening.
