Shuvaprasanna was an early member of the Society of Contemporary Art formed in 1960s, born out of a group exhibition held in 1959; it hoped to change the world with its work. The ideal was a consequence of the paradigm shifts taking place in Calcutta in 1960s-70s due to socio-political upheavals. These issues affected Shuvaprasanna’s oeuvre, an example of which is this work, titled Lament. Anguished bodies populate the picture plane that has a funereal palette; the symbolism is reinforced by the presence of a vulture and a leafless tree on the horizon.
