Though Satish Sinha had begun his art training under Abanindranath Tagore, he couldn’t complete it due to financial constraints. Later, like his contemporaries Jamini Roy and Atul Bose, he would create a personalised style of academic realism of which this nude study is an example. He maintained an interest in human anatomy throughout, creating portraits, chiefly of women, which were more an expression of his skill and less as tools of voyeurism. It was reinforced by the expression he gave to his models—in this case, a demure, young lass avoiding the gaze of the painter, her face clearly indicative of the several thoughts in her head.
