Muni Singh studied art in Lucknow, fresco making from Banasthali Vidyapith in Rajasthan, and stayed within the parameters of the miniature style of painting throughout his career. In this painting, Singh reverts to the miniature technique for a subject that would never have been part of the tradition—a woman sitting in her courtyard, cutting vegetables for a family meal. The simplicity of the image and style permits a glimpse of a garden beyond the door that would be in keeping with the miniature.
