Bireswar Sen’s intention as an artist was never to imitate nature but, as he said, to take from it that which ‘best accords with his [artist’s] own intentions’. The True Believer shows the artist’s command in creating works in the miniature format, which he preferred and practiced for most part of his artistic career. The human figure walking deeper into the thick forest seems to be on a quest for spirituality, and the artist thereby creates a work that is immediately striking and mystical.
