Piraji Sagara was trained at Sir J. J. School of Art, Bombay, and his interest in ‘burnt’ wood, in particular, was at par with his peer and fellow painter, Jeram Patel. In this Untitled work, he explores the relationship between people and their homes, reconciled through the emotional immediacy he communicates between them. Sagara uses sharp, clear lines to delineate architecture as well as features of the people. The flat tonal representations, the cuts with the underlay of bright colours and the simplicity of forms are in keeping with the search for a new direction for art in the 1960s.
