This Untitled head study by Piraji Sagara evokes numerous head studies done similarly by F. N. Souza, who, like Sagara, was also trained at Sir J. J. School of Art, Bombay, though was expelled before graduation. Souza was seven years older than Sagara but both were exposed to the same pool of European modernism to synthesise an independent vocabulary for modern Indian art. The latter, however, made this head study uniquely his own with his use of mixed media and architectural relief-like linear incisions that were so characteristic of his works in wood.
