Rendered in the style of traditional Indian miniature painting, Rekha Rodwittiya paints here a female figure, immediately reminding one of the classic images of Meera Bai with her iktara (single-stringed instrument). One of the first few bold feminists who defied convention, spoke—and sang—her mind, professed her long-lasting love for another man (Lord Krishna) while being married to someone else, wandering all over to imbibe knowledge for the sake of her music, Meera Bai’s story remains unparalleled. Rodwittiya, however, reinterprets the female figure from her own sensibilities.
