The decade of the 1970s in Madhvi Parekh’s career was marked by her evolution into a uniquely individual artist who had successfully and organically married her early influences with remembered and lived experiences of folk art, as evident in this Untitled ink on paper drawing. While the stunted lines and dots can be traced back to the influence of renowned German artist Paul Klee (1879-1940) to whose works she was introduced by her husband Manu Parekh, the characterisation of the central figure in this work is distinctly folk Indian. Yet, Parekh has refused to be tied down to any regional identity of the folk tradition, instead creating her own language in which she gives birth to a rural ecosystem with dexterity.
