Like a story on the wall of a village hut told through a painting, this Untitled work by Madhvi Parekh tells the story of goddess Durga slaying the demons, in her Mahishasuramardini (slayer of Mahishasura, the buffalo demon) avatar. The work is in the artist’s distinctive style of primitivist art—evolved from childhood memories, popular folk stories and rural legends. In the centre is the goddess in red, carrying her characteristic weapons in her four arms, and arriving on her vehicle, the tiger. The demon, Mahishasura, is shown in blue and identified with a buffalo at the bottom of the canvas.
