Unlike F. N. Souza, his fellow member of the Progressive Artists’ Group, the lines in Akbar Padamsee’s sketches were rarely angry or savage. They were warm, personal, had a gentle touch, much like his own personality. The eyes in Padamsee’s portraits immediately draw attention; prophet-like, seeking the unknown in a contemplative, meditative gaze. Padamsee continued creating the human face for most part of his artistic career, explaining, in his own words, ‘expression is all the more powerful when it is about a solitary figure.’
