A member of the Progressive Artists’ Group, Akbar Padamsee’s monochromatic works began in the Fifties when his figurative artworks and portraits ultimately gave way to his much-admired Grey series. The artist, who lived in Paris for many years before returning to India in the Sixties, continued creating portraits in his illustrious artistic career. These works pulsated with energy, showed the interplay of light and shadow, and were contemplative and spirited. With their expressive large eyes, a pensive gaze, these works created an immediate engagement with the viewer.
