The Nineties was a time of introspection, especially for artists of G. R. Iranna’s generation. On the one hand there were technological advancements and an era of economic liberalisation, while on the other, there was a political ideology that deepened the divide between communities in a secular nation. Iranna, a product of this generation of artists, created figures that negotiated these complexities, in the early phase of his career, which this Untitled painting represents. Later on, these figures appeared rarely with the artist focussing on other, equally compelling forms.
