Village Mela comes from the early phase of the career of New Delhi-based artist G. R. Iranna. Through his art, the painter here initiates an enquiry into his own feelings, his own journey. Razor-edged columns, shards and spikes have often recurred in his work to show suffering and pain. One wonders if this work, then, is a reflection of the artist’s complex adjustment to the city from the tranquil village life that he grew up experiencing?
