Terracotta with gold leaf, gold paint and artist's photograph with wooden base
As an artist, Himmat Shah explores mediums, forms, and textures, and how they combine to become timeless. As a sculptor, Shah has preferred working with terracotta, one of the oldest mediums available on the planet. Sometimes, as we see in this Untitled ‘bottle’, we find the artist juxtaposing the rawness of terracotta with the sophistication of gold or silver leaf. He places here his own image, thus, giving it the peculiar status of a ‘self-portrait’.
