Born in Lothal village in Gujarat into a Jain mercantile family, Himmat Shah was drawn to sculpture from an early age. The medium of terracotta fascinated him, taking him back to the time of the archaeological ruins and artefacts that he saw as a child. Shah’s favourite medium is terracotta, clay, which he finds fascinating, saying it is ‘older than the Vedas’. The Untitled (Head) is a subject that Shah perfected, creating forms that can best be described as existing outside of known time.
