Oil was K. K. Hebbar’s favourite medium, and he uses it in this painting, layer upon layer of pure pigment, to yield a brilliantly vivid texture and effect. The painting is characterised by both rhythm and movement—something the artist worked hard to achieve—and Hebbar’s deep connection with the Konkan coast in south-western India may have inspired its rich colour palette. In Hebbar’s hands, the painting blends form and expression in a subtle manner, creating a vivid, expressive work.
