S. L. Haldankar remained one of the busiest artists in his time, commissioned widely to make portraits of eminent personalities, among them Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya, Jagannath Sunkersett, Sir John Beaumont, Lady and Sir Leslie Wilson, and the Raja Saheb of Sawantwadi. In Sadhu, he paints in vivid detail the serene expression of an ascetic, showing the calm demeanour, the gentle eyes and an overall beatific expression. One of the finest in the genre of academic realism, Haldankar’s painting reveals the strength of his paintbrush.
