S. L. Haldankar was a member of important art committees and societies such as the Maharashtra Chitrakar Mandal and the Hansa Mehta Committee for Reorganisation of Art Education. A versatile painter, he trained in the realistic style but taught himself to handle diverse mediums and materials. The artist’s strong command on the paintbrush and his manner of capturing expressions, especially in the genre of portraiture, of which this Untitled painting is an example, shows why Haldankar remains one of the finest artists in Indian modernism.
