S . L. Haldankar’s delicate handling of transparent watercolour landscapes received special recognition, with several Bombay critics coining the term ‘open-air school’ for his technique. Interestingly, it reflected in the work of his son and fellow landscapist, G. S. Haldankar. The unidentified vista we see before us in this Untitled watercolour is probably of the plateaued landscape of the Western Ghats painted from atop a hill to reveal long shadows cast from the sunlight throughout the landscape, covering parts of the hilly slopes.
