Gogi Saroj Pal’s inability to accept the rules that confine women to ordained roles includes their helplessness in the face of superstitions that proscribe their lives. One such deals with eclipses, or passing comets, that are supposed to be bad for pregnant women—a myth that has no standing in medical or scientific facts. The vulnerability of this group of women in the face of such unreasonable faith being imposed on them creates a sense of fear—as depicted in this painting of women experiencing a sense of helplessness at their condition.
