Gogi Saroj Pal’s artistic practice has created a new iconography for the depiction of the female in Indian art. Her work in the 1990s, of which this Untitled painting is a part, stressed on women who were, literally, comfortable in their skin. They had a rare ease, a feeling of liberation in their nude form, even as they held difficult yogic asanas (postures)—the figure here attempts, for instance, a variation of vakra asana—and gave us a glimpse into how it felt to be victorious.
