Bimal Dasgupta’s paintings, no matter how abstract, were always landscapes painted in a manner that served to remind us of the artist’s ability to understand what lay above the earth’s surface or under it. This evocative painting can mean so many different things: a forest canopy spread over ground; the earth itself covering up the scorching heat of flame-red lava… The artist’s ability to add little hints of colour provide tantalising elements to help us grasp his intent, but even outside any such interpretation Dasgupta’s paintings are a breathtaking record of his view of the world we call home.
