Those who know Suhas Roy through the cottony beauty of the protagonist Radha in the eponymous series, would be surprised by his works that came before. Bloom, though bearing a happy title, is a work from the pre-Radha period when Bengal was under great turbulence due to the recently-crushed Naxalite movement, and Roy’s art, like that of most of his contemporary artists, reflected the dissonance of the society. He had been exposed to trends in European modernism during a stint in Paris at Atelier 17 and École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, and therefore, this work distinctive modernism tending to abstraction.
