In a life cut short tragically, Nikhil Biswas made some of the most compelling paintings, forcing us to wonder how the history of Indian modern art would have been altered if he had been around longer. He may have been known for his figures of ordinary men who stood against injustice, alongside his clowns, but in this painting featuring two female figures, he celebrates a sense of happiness and ease. He achieves this through a colour palette that is joyful and tenderly rendered.
