The art of Nikhil Biswas, whose career was cut tragically short due to his death at the age of thirty-six years, was spurred by the politics of his time, when Calcutta was a cauldron of uncertainty. But he also painted the city as a visually appealing urbanscape. In this Untitled work, his focus appears to be the tree-lined Maidan in Calcutta, the vast ground in the centre of the city drawing people for leisure activities, including some serious football. The dense buildings beyond the Maidan represent intense human activity that make Calcutta the busy metropolis it is.
