Nikhil Biswas has been immortalised and cherished as a flag-bearing modernist who made seminal contributions to the art scene of post-Independence Calcutta. However, Biswas remained a financially struggling artist, and the problems he faced in his own life gave rise to dark and mysterious characters whose suffering matched the artist’s own reality. They manifested as figures revolting against an unjust society, all of whom were drawn using black. The figure of this Untitled drawing exists in between his established subjects, but continues to share their collective aspiration for change.
