Charles W. Bartlett’s voyage in 1913 to India, Ceylon, Indonesia, China, and Japan, saw him travelling extensively through the subcontinent. Like many artists of his generation, he visited Amritsar and this view of the Golden Temple with a bunch of pilgrims seems to have caught his imagination. The sharp shadows suggest an afternoon sun overhead with the blue waters of the pond surrounding the temple, allowing him to introduce his favourite hue to the print.
