Charles W. Bartlett’s artist friend Frank Brangwyn introduced him to Japanese prints, and Bartlett eventually honed his skills as a printmaker further on a visit to Japan in 1915 when he met woodblock print publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, who then published twenty-one of Bartlett’s woodblock designs including six landscapes of Japan. He had travelled through India before visiting Japan, and this print of Jaunpur in what was then the United Provinces (now Uttar Pradesh), captures an oriental image of a family travelling on camelback by the banks of a rivulet that fronts a temple in the foreground and a mosque in the background.
