Art historian Yamini Telkar says, ‘S. K. Bakre the sculptor was also a phenomenal painter.’ Her reasons are very evident in this large Untitled work, where the central focus is a composition based on the triangle, a geometrical entity that the artist became obsessed with in the 1960s and explored abundantly in both his sculptures and paintings. While the muse may have been the same, Bakre composed the two genres of works differently, giving an insight into the wide range of his thought process. Yet, his sculptures always hinted that he was also a ‘phenomenal painter’ just as his paintings, including this one, came imbued with a sculptural quality.
