Ambadas pioneered non-representational tendencies in post-Independent Indian art. His works possess an element of discovery, wonder, mystery precisely because they are a paradox—viewers might think he paints nothing, but on closer look, they are a manifestation of the artist’s aesthetic vision and techniques. His works have a beautiful sense of movement; works full of chaotic tumultuous swirls from which some order emerges. The artist paints with a never-ending zeal, with his hurried and turbulent brush strokes posing limitless interpretations. Ambadas’s art invokes spirituality and oneness with the earth. His works, at times not dated, including the one under consideration here, denote an absence of chronology or a void where time is suspended.
