When he settled in Paris in the early 1970s, Akkitham Narayanan brought about a fusion of tantra-derived geometrical patterns with European abstraction. Referring to these paintings as ‘geometric abstractions’, Narayanan successfully evolved in his art, a unique visual vocabulary that was a homage to his regional identity, to his roots in India, to the memories that he spent growing up in his village in Kerala. An important member of the Madras Modern movement, Narayanan’s art is reinforced with colour shades and tonalities.
