Warm, earthy colours, characteristic of India’s traditional arts, have typified V. Viswanadhan’s work, which he synthesised with Western sensibilities that he continues to absorb as a resident of Paris since 1968. In that sense, this Untitled work is a departure as it essays a rather sombre colour palette. In every other aspect, however, it stays true to the abstract construction that Viswanadhan, like his peers such as G. R. Santosh and Biren De, was independently processing through his art in the Sixties and Seventies—arriving at a modern vocabulary through tantra while retaining their native identity at the same time.
