Even though attempts have been made to look for V. Viswanadhan’s roots in his art, the Paris-based Indian artist himself has felt no such need, as he has valued his freedom above all else. He is perhaps the only Indian abstractionist settled abroad who was sure of his India-inspired vocabulary right from the start of his career. When he arrived in Paris in 1968, the tantra and mandala imagery was well-etched in his mind—as evident in this Untitled work in a rich, tropical hue—which got enriched with the chisel of European exposure, and both fusing to give him a composite universal language.
