The primitivist proclivities of Jamini Roy’s art are, perhaps, one of the biggest reasons behind its enduring success. Rooted as it was in the ethos of the soil, his art was understood by everyone. He incorporated elements that had an every-day appeal, such as alpona symbols. In this Untitled work, those symbols used are flowers made of white and yellow dots, one above each elephant; the decoration on the forehead of the elephants; and shrubs highlighted with white dots. Such motifs are painted by women in rural India to this day, on the floors and walls of their houses, which Roy honoured through his art.
