Tempera on cloth National Art Treasure (non-exportable work)
In this Untitled painting by Jamini Roy, colours are applied flatly within dark outlines that define the forms. Drawing on the Kalighat folk tradition, Roy creates a remarkable pictorial symmetry of the three female figures, all donning sarees and holding their matkas, or earthen pots, carefully. The artist enhances the painting with vivid motifs, inspired from the alpana-adorned walls of village homes. The detailing is immense, and though Roy’s art was a confluence of cultures, his colour palette is an ode to Indianness in the picture.
