Tempera on canvas board National Art Treasure (non-exportable work)
What distinguished Jamini Roy’s paintings from the rest of his contemporaries was a signature style influenced by the Kalighat pats and patuas. Each figurative representation, then, was noted for its design, the lines—confident and minimal— along with the paintings having an attractive and direct simplicity, as is evident in this painting of a female figure. The earthy use of tempera renders the work a folk-like minimalism similar to the alpanas painted on floors and walls in village homes.
