Construction of the fort now known as the Purana Qila was begun by Humayun and continued by Sher Shah Sur. The view shows its western gate. In the space opposite this are the remains of a large city gate, also attributed to Sher Shah, and not the mysterious ruin shown here. The unevenness of the ground has also been exaggerated to enhance the picturesque and melancholy effect.
