Thomas Daniell, along with nephew William, is perhaps one of the best known of early English painters who travelled to India to document it visually. Their scenes of India were a great success when reproduced as prints upon their return to England, and are well-recognised in India as well in contemporary times. Daniell’s works of his native country, however, are not frequently seen in this part of the world. This Untitled (Great Britain) oil, therefore, is a rare work that shows rural England at the turn of the nineteenth century.
