Watercolour, charcoal and graphite on paper pasted on paper
Thomas Daniell’s paintings, sketchings and etchings (along with those by his nephew William) were not just one of the earliest visual documentations of the exotic East for Englishmen but also remain some of the most exquisite specimens of the genre till this date. Besides known monuments and geographical features, Daniell also spent time recreating beautiful, non-descript vistas he encountered on his extensive travels through the subcontinent, such as this waterfall cascading down a stack of ancient rocks. The wash effect of the colours used lends a dreamy quality to the landscape.
